Living in North Vancouver / Mountain Biking
This is not a place that took up mountain biking. This is one of the places that invented the modern version of it. The steep, technical, root-and-rock riding known the world over as "North Shore" style was born right here, on the slopes above town. Today the trailheads are a few minutes from the front door, the Grouse bike park runs in summer, and Whistler waits up the highway.
The Birthplace of the North Shore
Ask a mountain biker anywhere in the world about "the Shore" and they know exactly what you mean. The wooden skinnies and ladder bridges, the steep loamy descents through old-growth forest, the technical lines that demand everything — that riding style was pioneered on these mountains, and it put North Vancouver on the global map decades ago.
What makes it remarkable to live with is the access. Two of the most celebrated trail networks on the continent sit directly above the city, stitched together and cared for by the North Shore Mountain Bike Association and a fiercely committed local community. For a rider, the choice of where to live often comes down to one question: how fast can you get to the trailhead?
The Trail Networks
Two legendary mountains and a gentler valley floor, all within North Vancouver, covering everything from a first green to lines that humble professionals.
Above Lynn Valley
The classic North Shore network — a dense web of climbs and descents rising straight out of Lynn Valley, from the much-loved Bobsled flow trail through to the steep, technical lines the Shore is famous for. The everyday home trails for a huge share of local riders.
The east side
A vast network on the eastern mountain, ranging from machine-built flow to raw, rooty classics through the trees. Endless variety, and quieter pockets than Fromme, with trailheads close to Blueridge and Seymour.
Where you start
The gentler end. The Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve and the paved Seymour Valley Trailway are perfect for new riders, families and easy spins, and the lower trails are where many locals first learn the ropes.
The cross-mountain Baden Powell Trail also links much of the Shore for longer adventures. For current trail status, ratings and maps, the NSMBA and Trailforks are the local authorities, and conditions are worth checking before every ride.
Lift-Accessed Riding
When you want gravity laps without the climb, the Shore has you covered close to home, with a world-class option a short drive beyond.
Right on the local mountain, Grouse runs a lift-accessed downhill bike park through the summer season — gondola up, ride down, repeat. It is a genuine luxury to have gravity laps minutes from the city, ideal for progressing your descending without earning every metre of climbing.
About 90 minutes up the Sea-to-Sky Highway sits Whistler, widely regarded as the best lift-accessed bike park in the world and the home of Crankworx. Living on the North Shore puts the most famous downhill destination on the planet within reach of a day trip. Beginner zones through to pro-level terrain, all summer long.
For Every Rider
The Shore has a reputation for being unforgiving, and the legendary lines earn it. But the same mountains hold gentle, welcoming riding too, and a strong network of shops, schools and guides to bring you along safely.

Mountain Biking Questions
The two main networks are Mount Fromme above Lynn Valley and Mount Seymour on the east side, with gentler riding at the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. Grouse Mountain runs a lift-accessed bike park in summer, and Whistler is about 90 minutes away.
The North Shore is widely considered a birthplace of modern technical and freeride mountain biking, known for steep, root-and-rock terrain and wooden trail features. The trails are maintained by the North Shore Mountain Bike Association and a dedicated local community.
New riders and families do best starting on the Lower Seymour trails and the paved Seymour Valley Trailway, then progressing to green flow trails such as Bobsled on Fromme. Lessons from a local school are the safest way to build up.
It refers to the technical, steep style pioneered on these mountains, featuring roots, rock and built wooden features like skinnies and ladder bridges. The term is used by riders worldwide and originated here on the North Shore.
Yes. Grouse Mountain operates a lift-accessed downhill bike park through the summer, right on the local mountain. For a world-class park, Whistler Mountain Bike Park is roughly a 90-minute drive up the Sea-to-Sky Highway.
Lynn Valley sits at the base of Mount Fromme, while Blueridge and Seymour offer the quickest access to the Mount Seymour network. The Capilano Highlands are handy for Grouse and the western trails.
The North Shore Mountain Bike Association and Trailforks are the local authorities for trail status, difficulty ratings and maps. Conditions change with weather and trail work, so it is worth checking before every ride.
The mild coastal climate allows riding through much of the year, though the North Shore winters are wet and trails can be sensitive when saturated. Many riders ride all year and adjust trail choice to conditions.
