The Oakridge area was the last frontier in Vancouver. Development started in 1955 with the construction of Oakridge Centre and continued into the late 1960s with a wide variety of low rise commercial buildings, single homes, and apartment buildings. Built during the height of the automobile era, Oakridge Centre boasted the largest outdoor parking in the region. This automobile era also brought the construction of the Oak Street Bridge as well as the closure of the South Vancouver Street Car line.
